Russia and China veto UN resolution on Israel-Hamas war

On October 25, the UN Security Council voted on a resolution on the war between Israel and Hamas. Ultimately, the project was vetoed by Russia and China.

The author of the resolution is the United States of America. The document talked about resolving the humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip.

Russia and China blocked the UN resolution

Journalists noted that the draft resolution called for a stop to violence in order to ensure access to humanitarian aid for Gazans. In addition, the document stated that parties to the conflict must comply with international law when responding to “terrorist attacks.”

During the voting for the resolution, an overwhelming number of 10 of the 15 member countries of the UN Security Council expressed support for the US proposal. However, the collective decision was prevented by the opposing position of three countries, namely Russia, China and the UAE, which voted against the resolution.

In addition, two countries, Mozambique and Brazil, decided to abstain from voting. Ultimately, despite significant support, the resolution failed to pass as both Russia and China exercised their veto power.

Note! The UN Security Council consists of 15 member countries. Five of these members, including the United States and Russia, have permanent status and have the power to veto resolutions.

To gain support and secure a resolution, at least nine member states must vote for it and no permanent member must exercise their veto power.

Previously, the United States vetoed a decision of the UN Security Council

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, following the shelling of a hospital in the Gaza Strip, initiated a vote for a resolution on a humanitarian ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. However, this decision was vetoed by the United States. US Permanent Representative to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield explained her decision by saying that the resolution contained some shortcomings. According to her, the document does not contain a word about Israel’s right to self-defense. 12 out of 15 members of the UN Security Council voted for the resolution. Russia and Great Britain abstained from voting.
