Russia, among leaders in trips to the International Space Station

Moscow. A total of 280 citizens from 23 countries traveled to the International Space Station (ISS), with the largest number of visitors being representatives of the United States, Russia and Japan, according to data from the space agencies Roscosmos and NASA.

The first country in that ranking is the US, with 167 citizens. NASA astronaut Michael López-Alegría has accumulated the greatest number of flights to the station – five – followed by his colleagues Stephen ‘Steve’ Bowen, Mark Kelly, Richard Mastracchio, Frederick Sturckow, Peggy Whitson and Jeffrey Williams, with four flights. each.

In second place is Russia. According to Roscosmos data for November last year, the ISS received 59 Russians. In addition, at the beginning of March one more, Alexandr Grebionkin, flew. So 60 Russians traveled to the station, three of them – Yuri Malenchenko, Fédor Yurchikhin and Oleg Kanonenko – flew five times each.

The third leading country in number of citizens who traveled to the ISS is Japan, the orbital station was visited by 11 representatives of that country. Also in the top 5 of leading countries in number of citizens who flew to the ISS are Canada (9 people) and Italy (6).

April 12 is commemorated around the world as International Human Spaceflight Day. In Russia this holiday is called Cosmonautics Day and was established in honor of the first man launched into space, the Soviet citizen Yuri Gagarin.
