This is the seventh time in a day that the daily record for the number of Covid-19 victims has been exceeded.
With the rapid spread of the so-called Indian or delta type of coronavirus in the country, the number of infections registered in Russia since the beginning of the pandemic exceeded 5.75 million on Saturday, which is the fifth highest number of infected people in the world.
Meanwhile, the total number of Covid-19 casualties in the country has reached 142,253, the highest official figure in Europe, although the authorities are accused of trying to reduce the number of pandemic deaths.
Rosstat, which uses a broader definition to determine Covid-19-related deaths, reported at the end of April that the number of victims of the pandemic had reached 270,000.
By Saturday, 18.9 million of Russia’s 146 million people had been fully vaccinated.
Although vaccines have been available since December, in Moscow, which has become the epicenter of the third wave of the pandemic, only 1.8 million of the 12 million people have been fully vaccinated.
Meanwhile, the results of a survey published this week show that 54% of Russians still do not intend to get vaccinated.
However, vaccination has picked up pace since Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin announced in June that 60% of workers in the service sector should be vaccinated by mid-August. Other regions of Russia have followed his example.
