(Geneva = Yonhap News) Correspondent Ahn Hee = Russian President Vladimir Putin praised the Russia-Africa Summit held in St. A Kremlin spokesman said on the 29th.
According to TASS and Sputnik news agencies, spokesperson Peskov said that President Putin praised the organization of the event, mentioning that side events and forums were held during the summit in many fields, including sports, science, education, and media.
President Putin’s self-criticism seems to have been intended to highlight the fact that a series of activities to expand diplomatic reach and secure allies in the international community are producing results.
The Russia-Africa Summit, which was held for the first time in 2019, was held for the second time under the theme of ‘For Peace, Security and Development’.
At this meeting, African countries mentioned the need for a ceasefire in the Ukraine war, and President Putin announced that he would carefully consider the peace proposals of African countries.
According to the Russian Foreign Ministry, African countries have presented Russia with about 30 peace proposals.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said: “There have been more than 30 peace proposals related to Ukraine issues through official and unofficial channels, and we are grateful to all of them.”
African countries have reportedly delivered proposals to ease tensions between Russia and Ukraine over issues such as resuming grain exports to the Black Sea, lifting sanctions on Russian fertilizers and grains, suspending military activities and exchanging prisoners of war.
“We never rejected negotiations, but Ukraine withdrew from the negotiations in April last year and banned the negotiations itself from September of the same year,” Zakharova said. “We appreciate the efforts of African countries to stabilize the situation through mediation. give,” he said.
Recently, African countries have appeared to act as mediators between Ukraine and Russia. Last month, a peace delegation consisting of leaders from seven African countries, including South Africa, visited Ukraine to meet with President Volodymyr Zelensky.
However, some critics say that no significant progress has been made until the Russia-Africa summit is concluded.
Although 49 of the 54 member states of the African Union (AU) participated in this summit, only 17 countries were directly attended by heads of state, and compared to the first meeting in 2019, the summit attendance was less than half.
Analysts follow that President Putin’s favorable review of the summit was intended to emphasize that it was actually a substantial event despite negative evaluations from some over the success of the event.
The Kremlin Palace also announced that the leaders of four countries and the representatives of five countries participating in the summit would remain after the summit to attend the parade commemorating Russia’s ‘Navy Day’ held in St. Petersburg on the 30th.
