Russia Accuses Ukraine of Terrorist Attack to Justify New Mobilization: Expert Analysis

Having accused Ukraine of a bloody terrorist attack, Russia pursued the goal, among other things, to justify the announcement of a new mobilization,

After Russia has already officially accused Ukraine of involvement in the terrorist attack at Crocus City Hall, experts named the likely main goal of such an accusation.

In a comment for TSN.ua political scientist Vladimir Fesenko reported that even in the first hours after this terrorist attack, it became clear that Russia would blame Ukraine for it.

“I think that as long as the war continues, Russia will blame Ukraine for all mortal sins. This is inevitable. But this does not mean that we should come to terms with it and admit it. No. There are things that have nothing to do with us,” – says Vladimir Fesenko.

He continues: “Why is this being done, why are they accusing Ukraine? First version: this gives Russia the opportunity to solve two problems. The first problem is to increase repression within Russia. This could have been done without blaming Ukraine, but since there is a war going on, this will increase the effect.”

According to Fesenko, Russia’s accusations are directed against both the West and Ukraine.

“This gives (Russia – Ed.) the opportunity to neutralize any opposition. Neutralize with accusations that such people support terrorists. But the main and most dangerous thing: in some countries, even friendly to Russia, in particular in China, they fear that Russia may use this terrorist attack as a reason for the escalation of war, for aggression towards the West. And this already threatens international stability. I think that this is unlikely, but such fears exist. Russia reacts so aggressively to this terrorist attack with its accusations against Ukraine, against the West, that such fears arise,” says the political scientist.

How Russia is using this terrorist attack

When asked how else Russia could use this terrorist attack, Vladimir Fesenko replied: “This can be used as a reason for mass mobilization, a reason for massive missile strikes and bombings. Externally, these accusations should discredit Ukraine and present it as a terrorist state. Russia wants to mirror terrorism charges.”

Summarizing, the expert added: “The main thing for Russia is to try to reduce assistance from Western countries through a campaign of accusations against Ukraine. In addition, I think that these accusations are aimed at disrupting the global peace summit. A number of leaders of the so-called Global South are planning to take part there. Russia wants to disrupt this summit, wants its conditional partners to ignore it under the pretext of, they say, look what Ukraine is doing. This is an international goal.”

In addition, according to Fesenko, Russia has an internal goal, propaganda.

“Before this terrorist attack, there was a certain war fatigue in Russia. The level of anti-Ukrainian sentiment was not as high as before. Now a new wave of anti-Ukrainian hysteria has appeared. Domestically, Russian propaganda has been successful. They raised the level of anti-Ukrainian sentiment to almost maximum. This is a disaster and the fascism of the Russian state, and Russian propaganda, and the state of Russian society,” says the political scientist.
