Russia accused Ukrainian troops of killing and wounding their own civilians in the southern region of Kherson, Ukraine. In addition, Russia says several civilians managed to leave the steel factory in besieged Mariupol.
Reported from ReutersSunday (1/5/2022), the Russian news agency RIA mentioned the Ministry of Defense Russia accused Ukrainian troops of shelling a school, kindergarten and cemetery in the villages of Kyselivka and Shroka Balka in the Kherson region.
The ministry did not provide further details. Apart from that, there was no response from Ukraine.
Russian troops had captured the city of Kherson and given them a foothold just 100 km north of the annexed Crimea. In addition, most of the Russian troops occupied Mariupol which is a strategic eastern port city on the Sea of Azov.
The Ukrainian military, in a bulletin, said Russian troops were struggling to breach the Kherson administrative border and prepare the way for attacks in the cities of Mykolayiv and Kryvyi Rih.
In Mariupol, Russia declared victory on April 21 even as hundreds of Ukrainian soldiers and civilians took refuge in the Azovstal steelworks. On Saturday, a Ukrainian fighter inside said that 20 women and children managed to get out.
“We pulled civilians out of the rubble with ropes – it was the elderly, women and children,” said fighter, Sviatoslav Palamar, referring to the rubble inside the sprawling factory.
