Russia Accused of Strengthening Defense Cooperation with Iran and Using Attack Drones to Target Ukraine

The White House said on Friday that Russia appears to be strengthening its defense cooperation with Iran, and that it has received hundreds of attack drones that it is using to attack Ukraine.

The White House quoted information that was declassified recently, that the drones were manufactured in Iran and shipped across the Caspian Sea to reach Russian forces using them in Ukraine.

White House spokesman John Kirby said in a statement: “Russia has used Iranian drones in recent weeks to strike Kiev and terrorize the Ukrainian people, and it appears that the military partnership between Russia and Iran is increasing.”

He added, “We also have concerns that Russia is in the process of working with Iran to produce Iranian drones from within Russia.”

Kirby stated that the United States has information that Russia is receiving from Iran the materials needed to build a factory for drones, which can operate at full capacity early next year.

He said, “We will publish satellite images of the planned location of the drone factory in the Alabuga Special Economic Zone in Russia.”

Russia, Iran and marches

  • The United States imposed sanctions on Iranian executives at a defense company for supplying the drones to Russia.
  • Iran has admitted sending drones to Russia.
  • But Tehran said earlier that it had sent it before the launch of Russian military operations in February 2022.
  • Moscow denies its forces using Iranian marches in Ukraine.
