Russia: 48,000 families of missing soldiers have applied for DNA tests –

Forty-eight thousand relatives of Russian soldiers who are considered missing in the war in Ukraine have submitted applications to the Ministry of Defense for DNA tests to make it possible to identify the dead soldiers from their remains.

This figure was given by Deputy Defense Minister Anna Tsiviliova during a round table discussion on November 26, which provoked the reaction of the chairman of the defense committee of the Russian parliament, who said that these figures should not be published anywhere.

Independent news website Astra published a video of the meeting between Russian officials and parliamentarians, in which they discussed support for troops participating in the “special military operation” as Moscow calls the military invasion of Ukraine, and their family members.

Tsiviliova said 48,000 soldiers’ relatives have given free DNA samples to an Interior Ministry database.

Andrei Kartapolov, head of the parliament’s defense committee, responded as follows: “Anna Yevgenieva (Tsvilyova) just gave some numbers, including the missing. I sincerely request you not to mention these numbers anywhere. This is classified information, quite sensitive. And when we draw up the final documents, we don’t want those numbers to be released anywhere.”

Tsiviliova replied: “I am not giving the numbers of the missing, but the number of applications to us. Many will be found. Therefore, this number concerns applications, not data.”

The website Astra published video of the meeting, which was broadcast at the time on the website of the lower house of parliament, the Duma. But today it was no longer available on the website.

Reuters asked the Russian Defense Ministry for comment, but it did not immediately respond.

Russia has not released official statistics on its casualties in the war in Ukraine since the first months after the full-scale invasion began in February 2022. Western countries believe hundreds of thousands of Russian and Ukrainian soldiers have been killed or wounded in grueling fighting. trenches in Europe’s deadliest conflict since World War II.

Independent Russian news website Mediazona and the BBC’s Russian Service have identified the names of 79,819 Russian soldiers killed in Ukraine as of November 19 during the 33-month war. The Wall Street Journal, citing unnamed Western intelligence officials, reported last month that up to 200,000 Russian soldiers have been killed so far.

The Economist estimated last month that at least 60,000-100,000 Ukrainian soldiers had been killed and as many as 400,000 too wounded to continue fighting. Western countries believe that Russia has suffered more casualties than Ukraine, but still has a manpower advantage due to its much larger population.
