Russell believes in Hamilton: ‘Will come back stronger’

Mercedes is currently in a difficult phase. The bright spot of the current season is newcomer George Russell. But he doesn’t want to write off his teammate Lewis Hamilton just yet.

21 championship points and three positions separate seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton from his teammate George Russell. However, the 37-year-old Formula 1 world star is not at the top of the rankings (seventh place), but his challenger Russell (fourth place), who is just in his fourth year in the premier class and his first with the reigning constructors’ world champion.

While Russell has been able to make the best of the bad Mercedes so far, Hamilton is driving behind. However, the ex-Williams driver would not write off the experienced Hamilton. “I’m not going to get comfortable in that position because I know what he’s capable of,” Russell recently told Sky Sports F1. “Lewis will come back stronger, I have no doubt about that. He will definitely push me to the end,” added the 24-year-old.

New parts for Miami: Mercedes hopes for improvements

“Lewis clearly has the pace,” said the young Briton. “He’s incredibly fast and he’s already shown that this year. But it was difficult for us as a team to do it when it mattered.” Mercedes is currently struggling with the car. The W13 can’t keep up with Red Bull and Ferrari. Above all, the ongoing porpoising makes Toto Wolff and Co. to create.

In Miami there could already be the first improvements. Then Mercedes should give new parts. Among other things, a new rear wing should help to save a bit of time on the track. At the brand new Grand Prix, Hamilton and Russell are hoping for a car that is easier to drive.

According to Russell, the currently disappointing performance would not be due to Hamilton’s quality: “We are struggling equally,” explains Russell. “When the car is that far off balance and it’s not in the right window, it doesn’t really feel like a real race car.”
