Rush on home batteries due to high electricity price

If you do not use all of the electricity from your solar panels, you usually place it on the electricity grid. But since the abolition of the revolving counter, that is no longer so interesting. With a home battery you can also store that power for later use.

Home batteries are also a great success in combination with high electricity prices. Until recently, a home battery was a less interesting investment for many solar panel owners, but due to rising prices, many people try to avoid consuming a lot of electricity from the grid.

More than 11,000 home batteries have already been installed this year. This is evident from figures from grid operator Fluvius and the Flemish Energy and Climate Agency (VEKA) requested by VRT NWS. By comparison, 337 home batteries were installed in all of 2020. This year there are already more than 30 times more.

A home battery costs -installation and VAT included- at least 5,000 euros. In order to encourage that investment, the Flemish government provides a premium for its purchase with European support. A premium is also applied for for a large part of these home batteries. This concerns about 7,000 requested premiums.

The sharp increase is probably also related to the announced phasing out of the Flemish premium system. To avoid over-subsidisation and because batteries are quickly becoming cheaper, the premium will decrease every year. From 2025, a premium will no longer be provided.

At the same time, the premium was increased by EUR 50 to EUR 300/kWh from 1 April 2021. That amount applies to the first 6 kWh. For the next 6 to 9 kWh, the premium is 250 euros/kWh. It is a maximum of 2,550 euros per battery. Please note: the premium can never exceed 40 percent of the investment costs.
