In 1972 there are 78 participants in the women’s run in New York. It is then a unique event. This year there are 7000 runners on the 10 kilometers. It is estimated that 200,000 women have participated in fifty years. The anniversary edition has a top field.
The Ethiopian winner Senbere Teferi crosses the finish line in New York after 30.43 minutes. Her personal best is 30.38 min. (Tilburg). Teferi (27) also won the New York half marathon earlier this year. Last year the Ethiopian athlete set the best world time at 5 kilometers on the road in 14.29 minutes in Herzogenaurach, Germany. Olympic marathon champion Peres Jepchirchir also starts, but after about 8 kilometers she crashes. She still finishes fifth. Kenyan Sharon Lokedi is now second in the 10 kilometers in 30.43 min. (pr). Keira D’Amato takes third in 31.03 min. That is the fastest American time in a women-only race at this distance. The course record stands. In 2002 the Moroccan Asmae Laghzaoui ran 30.28 min. in New York.
