At the Grand Prix in New York, Spaniard Adel Mechaal has a very strong last kilometer in the 3000 meters with 2.25.91 min. He wins the race with a big lead in a new European indoor record: 7.30.82 min. one and a half seconds faster than his compatriot Sergio Sanchez. It is a fast race with many (personal) records, but Mechaal (31) is clearly the strongest athlete.
Mechaal was born in Morocco; since 2013 he has a Spanish passport. He already showed his good form last weekend. On Friday, the Spaniard will run 7.36.57 min in the 3000 meters in Karlsruhe, before adding a national cross title on Sunday in Jaen. With more competition, the new European record holder expects to be able to run under 7.30 min. That will probably happen at the World Indoor Championships in Belgrade.
