Running as a medicine for longevity: Elena Morini’s thesis

Doctor Elena Morini with the young athletes of the Canottieri Eridanea

A degree at 37 for Elena Morini. With a fascinating thesis: Health biomarkers. “Running as a key lifestyle medicine for longevity”: from the genetic root to the branches of application “. A thesis that starts from San Raffaele, but which has roots and work in the Casalasco area. This is Elena’s story.

On July 20 last year I applied for a thesis at San Raffaele, and as a starting study for my research I was offered the treatment of Duck-chul Lee, Angelique G. Brellenthin, Paul D. Thompson, Xuemei Sui, I-Min Lee, Carl J. Lavie – Running as a Key Lifestyle Medicine for Longevity. I wondered what imprint I wanted to give to my research to get out of the ordinary, so epigenetics immediately appeared to be the most interesting way.

Because? What genes represent, how they express themselves and how they can be influenced through our lifestyle should be information to be extended to the community. Hence my desire to integrate the studies learned during my studies at San Raffaele with 51 other research studies worldwide to create a thesis of scientific interest, but which could then be transformed into a training and information project for the reach of all, from the youngest children of school age to the third age.

My research has its roots in a primordial treatment between Nutrition / Running / Emotional Wellness to promote biomarkers of health and therefore of longevity such as microRNAs, telomeres, XBP1, NFR2, cytokines, LTP monoamines and synaptic plasticity. This protocol, promoting health, slows down the aging processes, stimulating cell regeneration, preventing and countering declining diseases, generating psychophysical well-being and leading back to homeostasis synonymous with longevity.

At 37 years old with family, children, work and in a context of global difficulty dictated by Covid, I know I made a courageous choice in deciding to get back into the game at the University level, but to be able to study in contact with teachers, researchers and doctors of the San Raffaele allowed me to see wonderful realities that literally thrilled me to the point of thinking that they could also be integrated into our small community at low cost. In the humblest thought possible, I believe that a small seed if well cultivated can generate innumerable benefits first to the single person and then to the small community in which he lives, with the hope that the projects that will derive from my studies can be small sprouts of knowledge to be given. to everyone.

Among the countless research approaches and the modus operandi of the doctors and researchers of the San Raffaele in Rome, I treasured how it is integrated into the lives of many patients and former patients, not only the life-saving drug therapy, but in support of it and for the stabilization and / or improvement of the pathology, creating protocols with a nice synergy between nutrition, sport and mind.

The 360-degree vision of the person, the team work between general practitioner, specialist, psychotherapist, nutritionist and the graduate in motor science allows a re-education to well-being and a new approach to lifestyle that often for various personal issues we tend not to evaluating or neglecting thinking that the frenzy of life and work may be enough to support our health, when physical and mental health is all we have and we must take care of for a healthy and long-lasting life.

San Raffaele in the courses addressed very important issues from the cancer patient to the one with cardiocirculatory disorders to the one with neurodegenerative diseases or the disabled; He also made an overview of education in prevention, up to the most pedagogical aspect addressed to children and young people of school age with a motor approach for the management of the emotional component in School Timing and out of school in the balance EUstress – Stress – Distress with an educational window aimed at improving learning and academic performance.

Another very important aspect is wellness education in the trimester preceding the desire for pregnancy in order to be able to donate countless benefits not only to the future mother but to the unborn child.

My treatment and my wonderful result are thanks to the countless people, of the Casalasco and not who have lent themselves to support my studies and for this I thank them one by one: Topic Late for technical and moral support during the months of discussion; Federica Passera, Lorenzo Franchi, Andrea Sartori, Mirco Bernardi e Sarah Fallavena for the support in the technical gestures inherent to athletic training.

Special thanks to Nilla Barbieri who helped me to cultivate with so much love my greatest passion, Dance, the real one, the one made up of dreams and emotions, and to my dearest friends met at the bar who lent themselves to study in vivo; thanks to those who taught me to run, and encouraged me to never give up, even at 37, especially Professor Carlo StassanoInterflumina of Casalmaggiore and Professor Stefano Ventura.

And last but not least, indeed to conclude with a flourish, a thank you with all my heart to the families, girls and boys of Canottieri Eridanea for being my source of inspiration during this period: Beranti Gloria, Canevarolo Marco, Grasselli Alessandra, Guarnieri Filippo, Carlo Invernizzi, Elisa Marca.

My main goal to make sense of 12 months of research? A small but important re-education to life for today’s society, starting with my children, extending information at school and parenting levels, so that they can nest lessons for health, sport and well-being for future generations.
