Rumors suggest the iPhone 15 Pro Max will feature an improved ‘periscope’ telephoto lens with 6x optical zoom

The iPhone 15 Pro Max is expected to have a ‘periscope’ telephoto lens. The lens is known to support about 6x optical zoom and 20x digital zoom, which is improved from the 3x zoom provided by the latest version of the iPhone.

While the iPhone 15 family is still months away, rumors of an iPhone 16 camera are already circulating. According to the latest rumor from Weibo’s user Digital Chat Station, the iPhone 16 Pro Max will feature a longer ‘super-telephoto’ camera. Of course, since the launch is more than a year away, even if the information in the planning stages is accurate, it could change before manufacturing begins.

Currently, the iPhone 14 Pro Max and iPhone 14 Pro are equipped with a 24mm wide-angle camera and a 77mm telephoto camera, supporting 3x zoom. The iPhone 15 Pro Max (but not the iPhone 15 Pro), which will be released this fall, is expected to feature a 6x zoom periscope lens with a 150mm range. Generally, in photography, an ‘ultra’ or ‘super’ telephoto lens means a lens with a focal length of 300mm or more, so it corresponds to about 12x zoom. Currently, the Galaxy S23 Ultra supports 10x optical zoom and 100x digital zoom.

There were also rumors that the periscope lens, previously only available on the Pro Max model, would also be available on the iPhone 16 Pro in a year. At the time, there was also news that the iPhone 16 Pro Max would be equipped with a larger and better-performing 1/1.14-inch image sensor, and this rumor supports this.
