Rumor: Samsung gives Galaxy S22 primary 50-megapixel camera – Tablets and phones – News

Samsung would like to equip its Galaxy S22 smartphone with a primary camera with a resolution of 50 megapixels next year. The current Galaxy S21 has a 12-megapixel camera, just like the predecessor S20.

The information comes from twitterer FrontTron and includes also on SamMobile. It is unknown which primary camera is involved. The sensor sizes of the various models from Samsung and Sony with this resolution differ. Smaller sensors come in at around 50 square millimeters, the largest being Samsung’s own 1/1.12″ sensor of 98 square millimeters.

Due to the higher resolution of the primary camera, it can also film in 8K. The current primary camera of the S21 cannot do that, because it has too few pixels. For 8K recordings, a resolution of around 33 megapixels is needed; 7680×4320 pixels.

In the new setup, Samsung would replace the 64-megapixel ‘telephoto’ camera from the S21 with a 12-megapixel sensor with a lens that offers around 3x magnification over the primary camera. Typically that comes out around 75mm in 35mm equivalent. The ultra-wide-angle camera would again have a 12-megapixel sensor.

Previous rumors point to a collaboration with camera manufacturer Olympus and the integration of optical image stabilization with sensor-shift, something that is also in the iPhone 12 Pro Max from Apple. The S22 would also have a slightly smaller screen than the S21. The S22 and S22+ would both have a plastic housing. If Samsung follows its regular schedule of releases, the S22 series will be out early next year.
