Rumor: Naughty Dog is working on The Last of Us remake for PlayStation 5 – Gaming – News

Sony has been working behind the scenes for several years on a remake of The Last of Us for the PlayStation 5. It is not yet known when it will be released. The game originally appeared for the PS3 in 2013 and a remaster was released for the PS4 in 2014.

According to insiders the spoke with Bloomberg game journalist Jason Schreier, a small team within Sony came up with the idea a few years ago to remake The Last of Us for the PlayStation 5. That was during the development of The Last of Us Part II and the idea was to make the two games then available in a bundle for the PS5.

It would be the Visual Art Service Group, a support studio that helps larger PlayStation studios create games. The group of about thirty developers actually planned to do a 2007 remake of Uncharted, but that would be more expensive as there was a lot to redesign. According to those involved, Sony gave the group little budget and attention. This would be evident from the fact that the group was never given a full studio name.

The remake of The Last of Us was reportedly approved and given the project name T1X. The game’s original developer, Naughty Dog, was developing The Last of Us Part II at the time. The VASG planned to provide part one with the graphics enhancements of the successor and to offer the games together for the PlayStation 5.

Sony would have kept the project secret and not given the team a budget to hire extra people. In 2019, part of the remake was complete, but in November of that year, Dutchman Herman Hulst was appointed as head of PlayStation Worldwide Studios. The former CEO of Guerrilla Studios found the remake project too expensive according to the sources.

When actual production on the remake began, the VASG was called in to help with The Last of Us Part II. That game had been delayed from 2019 to 2020 and the group had to help developer Naughty Dog finish the game. When that game was ready, ‘dozens’ of Naughty Dog developers were added to the team working on the remake. Subsequently, that studio was also put in charge and responsible for the project.

It is not known when the remake of The Last of Us will be released and what improvements it will receive. The game appeared in 2013 for the PlayStation 3 and a year later a remaster was released for the PlayStation 4. That is a graphically polished version, a remake would be a completely new build game, for example in a new engine.

By the way, there is no PlayStation 5 version of The Last of Us Part II yet and it is not known whether it will be released. Sony has already given a 60fps update to some of its exclusive games for the PS5, including God of War, Ghost of Tsushima and Days Gone. It is striking that The Last of Us Part II has not received such an update. It is also possible that we are working on a larger upgrade, which will make more improvements thanks to a higher framerate only.

Geen Days Gone 2

According to the Bloomberg article, Bend, the developer of Days Gone, has proposed making a second installment of the open world zombie game, but Sony would not have approved of that. Days Gone was released in 2019 and was profitable, but received lower ratings than other Sony titles. Sony would like to focus mainly on blockbusters.

A team from Bend would then have been put on helping Naughty Dog with a multiplayer game. Other Bend developers are said to be working on a new Uncharted game under Naughty Dog’s supervision. Top people of the studio would not have been happy with that and left. The remaining management then requested to be removed from the Uncharted project. That wish would have been granted and Bend would work on his own game again, but details about it are not known. Sony has not responded to the reporting.
