Microsoft is said to be working on a lighter version of its Teams collaboration tool. The lighter version should, among other things, require less processing power and be more economical with the battery of laptops. A preview would come online at the end of March.
To enable that, the client switches from Electron to Webview2 from Edge, reports The Verge. The React library for Javascript would also no longer be in the app, which should make it lighter. Part of the work is already in the Teams client for Windows 11 for consumers and would also become available for companies with the new version. They are still on the old client.
In addition to being more economical for the battery and CPU, the new client would also require less memory. Teams could use the new version with about half the memory of the current version. According to The Verge, which often has information about unannounced Microsoft services and products, a preview of the new version of Teams will be released at the end of March. Companies can then still choose to use the old version. The new version will be released definitively at a later date.
