Rumor: Mario Kart 9 is in full development and comes with a “new twist”

Mario Kart is, of course, one of Nintendo’s most important franchises. Mario Kart 8 was released in 2014 for the Wii U. Nintendo also released the game in 2017 for the Nintendo Switch, under the name Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Both releases have performed well in terms of sales and can be called an unadulterated success. However, the question is: is a new part already being worked on?

According to analyst Dr Serkan Toto, the answer is a resounding ‘yes’. Toto works for Japanese gaming consultancy Kantan Games and spoke about it on GamesIndustry.biz. According to the analyst, Nintendo is working hard on the development of Mario Kart 9. We could expect an announcement during the course of this year, according to Toto. He also claims that Mario Kart 9 will have a “new twist”, but he didn’t elaborate on this.

“I am aware Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is still selling very well on the Nintendo Switch, but Mario Kart 9 is in active development (and comes with a new twist) and Nintendo could tease it this year.”

In the same message, Toto also states that Nintendo will reveal a mobile game from one of their well-known IPs this year, without mentioning which franchise it is.

“On mobile, Nintendo has been very silent since Mario Kart Tour’s launch in 2019, but I think 2022 is when we will see an established IP arriving on smart devices again.”
