Dear Mrs. Vaptsarova,
Dear People’s Representatives,
Ladies and Gentlemen,
We have gathered to honor the poet and anti-fascist Nikola Vaptsarov. And in his person and the thousands of martyrs of a holy cause.
The poet survived all attempts of mediocrity to overshadow his poetic talent. That is why his poems do not grow old, and his words are engraved in the memory, while those of his detractors burden only their own conscience. The anti-fascist Vaptsarov is a martyr of a righteous cause, which in recent years the new revisionists are trying to erase from our history. That is why the vandal attacks on the anti-fascist monuments and the inculcation of historical ignorance in society.
Today, when democratic values are under daily attack, when old demons are rising everywhere in the world, it is important to honor those who spared no effort in the fight against fascism with its laws to protect the nation and the state, who died for freedom and dreamed for justice.
Even women, children and thousands of people with dignity and ideals fell victim to this struggle. And Nikola Vaptsarov is the most vivid symbol of the Bulgarian tragedy of killing talent and persecuting even his memory.
But in this battle of terror versus ideal, of mediocrity versus talent, the spirit that survives violence and obscurantism invariably wins.
