/ world today news/ Let’s cherish our history and traditions and not forget that we pave the way forward. Therefore, today let us bow down to all modern awakeners, to our teachers, educators, moral and spiritual pillars, to the people who burn in creation, enrich our value system or have the courage to expose our weaknesses, who carry within themselves this same worthy spark , carried over the centuries. This was stated by President Rumen Radev, who today in Plovdiv participated in the official celebration of the Day of the holy brothers Cyril and Methodius, of the Bulgarian alphabet, education and culture, and of Slavic literature.
In his greeting to residents and guests of Plovdiv, the president pointed out that the Day of the Bulgarian alphabet, education and culture and of Slavic literature gathers us again near the temples of the Bulgarian spirit.
Rumen Radev highlighted the important role of Plovdiv in the decisive events of the Bulgarian revival, in the struggle for ecclesiastical and political independence, in the trials of the new Bulgaria. He pointed out that the city proves its role even today in the field of culture and art and civic courage. “Precisely here, as early as 1851, the dawn of today’s holiday broke, to spread from city to city and become a day for every Bulgarian school, a symbol and foundation of the Bulgarian nation. Here, on the solid soil of Plovdiv, the respect for the holy brothers sprouted, so that the flame of patriotism and enlightenment could spread throughout the Bulgarian land,” said the president in his speech.
Rumen Radev urged us to remember that this “Plovdiv fortress of the spirit” was built with dedication, self-denial, wisdom, foresight and audacity of prominent Bulgarian intellectuals such as Nayden Gerov, Joakim Gruev, Hristo Danov, Stoyan Chomakov and many others, who with pen and they preached that the greatest human sin is ignorance, and the way to get rid of oppression, poverty and evil is only in sound science, faith and universal enlightenment.
As part of the celebration, His Eminence Metropolitan Nikolay of Plovdiv held a prayer service, and wreaths and flowers were laid in front of the monument to the Slavic equal apostles in “May 11” square. After the ceremony, President Radev, the Metropolitan of Plovdiv, representatives of educational and cultural institutions, of the local government led a festive procession for May 24. Led by students carrying the icon of St. St. Cyril and Methodius, it started from “11 May” square and continued to “Stefan Stambolov” square. Before participating in the solemn celebration of the holiday, the head of state lit a candle in the Church of St. St. Cyril and Methodius.
