/ world today news/ 146 years ago, Freedom embraced Sofia, after 500 years of black slavery. Today, 146 years later, the unasked question resounds – is Sofia free? This is what ABV chairman Rumen Petkov said in his speech in front of the Monument to the Bulgarian Militiamen today, where the lithium procession ended on the occasion of the 146th anniversary of the Liberation of Sofia and the Russo-Turkish Liberation War of 1877-1878. He emphasized that our duty to our ancestors is today to keep Sofia and our Motherland free as they were bequeathed to us.
„We are proud because we can worship the liberating brothers. Because we can bow our heads before these two hundred thousand ambassadors of Russia in our land, whom no one can ever expel. Today we must pay homage to the Romanian heroes who gave their lives for the freedom of Pleven. Is it so difficult to stand up and say – you have Schengen because we have Shipka, you have Paris because we have Pleven. You have Strasbourg because we have the burning and bloody Stara Zagora. You have Brussels because we have Batak.
Even today we owe these short stanzas “I am uncle from Batak. Do you know batak?” to make them a part of our children’s daily life. So they can ask all their friends around the world – do you know Batak? Because without Batak, without our martyrs, without our saints, this Europe would not exist.”
Today, January 4, marks the 146th anniversary of the Liberation of Sofia. On that day, divisions of the Western Detachment of the Russian Army, commanded by Gen. Gurko, solemnly enter the future Bulgarian capital.
