ruling party wins legislative elections – DW – 10/27/2024

The conservative ruling party Georgian Dream won the legislative elections in Georgia, the electoral commission announced this Sunday (10/27/2024), a victory rejected by the pro-European opposition, which denounces “stolen elections” and “a constitutional coup” in this country of the Caucasus.

After counting more than 99% of the ballots, the party obtained 54% of the votes, compared to 37% for the coalition of four pro-European parties, said the president of the electoral commission Giorgi Kalandarishvili at a press conference.

“As the results show (…), Georgian Dream has secured a solid majority” in the new Parliament, party executive secretary Mamuka Mdinaradze told reporters after the first results were known.

However, the opposition contested the results. “We do not recognize the false results of a stolen election,” said Tina Bokuchava, leader of the United National Movement (MNU), one of the opposition coalition parties, which accuses Georgian Dream of pro-Russian authoritarianism.

For his part, the leader of the Akhali party, Nika Gvaramia, denounced “a usurpation of power and a constitutional coup” by the government. “Georgian Dream will not remain in power,” he added.

The elections were “marred by inequalities, pressures and tensions,” observers from the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), NATO and European Union (EU) organizations considered this Sunday.
