How writes server Variety.com, the nine-part miniseries focuses on the fates of real American pilots Gale Cleven and Curtis Biddick. They are played by Austin Butler, who recently drew attention to himself with the role of Elvis Presley, and Barry Keoghan, famous for last year’s Fairies of Inisherin.

Some episodes were directed by the American Cary Joji Fukunaga, signed under the Bond film No Time to Die or the first series of the Dark Case series.

The novelty was created by adapting the book of the same name by Donald L. Miller, which was published by the CPress publishing house in a Czech translation by Marek Pavka and Petr Šťastný. Specifically, the miniseries will focus on the 100th bombing group, nicknamed in English The Bloody Hundredth or Krvavá stovka, from Eighth Air Force American forces. Its members in Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress long-range bombers carried out raids on Berlin, Hanover and Dresden, among others.

“Squadron after squadron rose into the sky, where they formed into groups and wings, and then flew southeast to their targets across the sea. Behind six hundred glittering and flashing wings, white contrails remained in the sky of England,” Miller quotes in the book of military historian John Keegan, who grew up in England and saw the machines take off.

Members of the Eighth Air Army also participated in a raid on a chemical plant near Záluží u Mostu and carried out the last raid on Škodovka in Pilsen in April 1945. It is not clear whether any of these events will make it into the miniseries. Miller mentions both incidents in the book.

Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks have been dealing with the theme of World War II since 1998, when Spielberg made an Oscar-winning film Save Private Ryan starring Hanks. Three years later, they produced a ten-part miniseries together Brotherhood of the Undauntedwhich told the story of an elite unit of the US Army called Easy Company and won a Golden Globe and seven TV Emmy Awards.

In 2010, Spielberg and Hanks tried to follow up on the success of Brotherhood of the Undaunted with another miniseries Pacific, which was even awarded eight Emmys. Shortly thereafter, they started developing the new movie, i.e. Ruler of the Heavens, initially again for HBO television. Due to the high budget, which according to The Hollywood Reporter website achieved up to 250 million dollars, i.e. about 5.7 billion crowns, but the project was eventually taken over by Apple.

The mini-series wants to show what the pilots risked in the war and how intense the friendships formed between them as a result. “Some were shot down and captured, others wounded or killed. And others were lucky enough to return. Whatever fate awaited them, the experience left a mark on all of them,” reads the annotation of the miniseries.
