The new coach of Panathinaikos, Rui Vitoria, in his official presentation by PAE, avoided the long-winded statements and emphasized that in modern football if the whole team does not work, it will not have the desired results.
Vitoria’s statements in detail:
-On what he thinks Panathinaikos needs to change in order to move to the next level and the challenge of the championship: “I would like to tell you that it is a special honor and a great privilege to be here and to coach such a great club. To thank the club for the challenge, the president for his trust.
The first and most important thing to do is intelligence. Of course I know the team, I saw a lot of Panathinaikos. We need to focus on the details. I am convinced that we will do a very good job. We will play to win on Sunday. We will go step by step to give our ideas, surround our players with confidence so they know what to do in the coming days and weeks. Always when there are changes, there is motivation, but there is a need to get to know the team more. To bring the good energy to the team, but to bring good results, we have to do different things.”
-On his football philosophy and how he would describe himself: “Of course in certain matches we look to play in a different way, what I like is that my team is intertwined with the pace of the match. What we are looking at is the team controlling and dominating the game. But we never play alone. Essentially, our thinking is to have possession, make attacks and when we lose the ball, immediately recover it. I want to convey to you that this club is passionate and with great ambition. When I go to a group it is to understand the culture, the way of thinking of the group. If there is ambition and will here, we will look to set it in motion. Essentially what I will impart is what I told you, passion, balance and possession, so that we can be dominant. Of course, this is not easy and it is not just words. We have to do it on the pitch. From now on, to implement all these ideas”.
-For the fact that he has worked in difficult conditions (Guimaraes), or in teams with a big budget (Benfica). How important is the budget and what he prefers to manage: “I don’t think the budget is the most important thing. I understand that there are ways for a team to evolve. I naturally look at who the new players are, how they prepare. We must also see the reality, where the club is going in the future. I have many ways to build this philosophy, with time, stability to build edifice. The budget is important, but not decisive.”
– It is this passion, the battle, the rallying, the ingredients for Panathinaikos to win the championship: “I will tell you my opinion. In no case will a coach who comes alone solve all problems. No player signing for one team will solve any team’s problems. It’s not just having money that solves problems. There are clubs with large reserves that do not solve problems. The faith that the coach has, the quality of the players and the support from those around, together with the people, are a guarantee for something strong. We know the requirements. We understand framing and what we need to do is frame each other to succeed. We want our fans to push us and we want to do something for them. In fact, this is what we should do, is to go step by step, so that we can all work together with stability, to take the next step”.
-How he intends to manage the time and pressure for the championship: “My thought is that we are in a new period. I know the tradition, what the club wants. I have been in clubs with a lot of difficulties as well. There is only one way. Trust, confidence, faith in the people around us and war. Important to know where we want to go. Let’s not deviate from our beliefs. Luck always plays a role. We should not think about what happened in the past, we should see the moment and the moment is for us all to work together. I am no better, no worse than anyone else. I have my own thoughts and they help me accomplish the work I want. Essentially we all have to work together and when we are all united things will go much better.”
-On whether he will take another path and whether some players will be activated: “I talked about intelligence. So it wouldn’t be smart for me to make all the changes at once. Systems issues are secondary. More basic is to implement our basic ideas and how we will attempt it. What is my main concern is the big picture, the main thing is to give the basic idea and context. Also, I’m well aware that you can’t change a team even in 2-3 days. We will see team with my own ideas and we will see everything. From what I have seen, all players are active. I was very happy with the quality of players that we can use in any need that arises. You know there are players with more pace, it makes me look at everything globally and determine the way we are going to win. The more active a player is, the closer he is to the game.”
-On whether the success of his work will be judged by the title: “I won’t hide it, such a club looks to win. Whoever comes here, comes with ambitions to achieve some things. This mindset is everyday. Having this mentality we will see in the end the result we have achieved. I know the requirements well, I know the quality of the club, I know the tradition and what it represents. I didn’t come here in fear. I am committed to working towards this ambition, game by game. We are not cheap sellers of dreams, if I were I would say come here and we will win the championship. If you want it, without working you won’t achieve it. Every day I want to inject that ambition. I know which clubs are for championship. Above all the important word is ambition. Finally, have hope that everything will be fine.”
-Which system will give speed: “I don’t want to go into details. Many times I wish for things and I don’t get them. A team that is dominant, balanced, a team that has the intelligence to understand every moment of the game, to show the will to win. All this is data that I want to get out in the character that I want to put on the playing field. It is important that the players have the comfort to show what they have to show. The team must always have the balance in order not to give the opponent the opportunity to develop. It’s not easy to work everyday. I will take advantage of the time so that what I want to happen. The impression is that I will take advantage of all the days to work. You know from your professions that sometimes it works out for you. I have the experience to be able to smell what is about to happen. My first sniff is good. To convey my thoughts to the players and for them to take them out on the pitch.”
-On the goal of a good course in Europe and whether he will utilize the material of the academies: “The team has potential. There are teams that had potential and things didn’t pan out. We want to see how we go. What I want is how the material I have is to make it. It is done with work every day and making the players believe in our ideas. To make all the people around us believe in what we want to do. To think that it is not only 11 players who can solve the problems, it will be done by everyone. We have a great roster, but we may not have made the connections and without that we won’t be successful. All players must be connected for the result to be a team. It’s the mindset that’s important. Let’s put all the pieces to work. Now I know the players, I don’t even know the nicknames. In these matches I will use the players I have in the team. If there is quality in the academies as well, very gladly. If we want to step on two boats, then we will be wrecked. At the moment we are going the way I told you, then I will look at the next step. That’s how it was in all the clubs.”
-On which coach is his role model and who he admires: |I am a physical education teacher and I played soccer. When I see that what I do, I started it with those that no one knows and these are not theories, they are the things of everyday life. Of all the Portuguese, Jose Mourinho is a reference for me, and especially for the Portuguese coaches. Today when I think about the game I would say that coaches are thieves of ideas. We steal ideas and see how we can make them our own. I can’t tell you no reference one. There is a person who makes it very simple, the one who makes us change our way of thinking. And he is a philosopher. Manuel Sergio. He says that the important thing is not to shoot, but the person who will shoot is important. This makes you change the way you think about your work. It’s not the technique that matters, but to work with the mind so that the technique is different.”
-What is the first advice to the players and what is the top resource for a coach to go to war: “The advice I gave to the players is that the coach alone does not solve everything. If we all don’t think collectively about the problems, then we don’t get anything done. With Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo you could find solutions. In modern football, if the whole team doesn’t work, you won’t get a result. Tactical issues aside, this is the bottom line. Winning a championship is hard. It’s the mentality that out of 10 fights will make you win 9. When a fight is over he puts it out of his mind and moves on to the next one. You don’t do it overnight, it’s important to set the stage for people to have this way of thinking. The most important weapon is work and emotional control. If we don’t have him, with the demands that exist in modern football, then maybe you can succeed soon, but not for a long time.”
