Panathinaikos and <a href="http://www.world-today-news.com/a-bola-benfica-one-of-these-7-clubs-will-be-the-opponent-in-the-3rd-qualifying-round-of-the-champions-league-benfica/" title="A BOLA – Benfica: one of these 7 clubs will be the opponent in the 3rd qualifying round of the Champions League (Benfica)”>Rui Vitoria have come to oral agreement and apart from a shocking prospect, the former coach of Benfica, Spartak Moscow and the Egyptian national team will sit on the trefoil bench in Sunday’s match against Volos.
The course of Rui Vitoria
Born in April 1970 in an area outside Lisbon, the Vitoria he fought as a midfielder in teams of lower categories. He retired at the age of just 32 and since then began his career in coaching.
His first… acquaintance with the “eagles” of Lisbon took place in 2004, spending two seasons as a coach in the youth ranks. However, his second term was also the most important for him. There had been a period in which he saw his “stocks” rise, initially as her coach Pass Ferreira with a highlight being the seventh place in the league, the highest the club had until then, but also the conquest of the Portuguese Cup with the Vitoria Guimaraes.
The trophies with Benfica
In the summer of 2015, Benfica decided to invest in his project Rui Vitoriawith his first season being excellent. A championship with a record collection of points and progress to its quarter-finals Champions League. This was followed by the conquest of the Super Cup, as well as a total of all the major trophies in the country, as a result of which he renewed his contract in 2017. However, the continuation did not develop ideally, as the heavy defeat came from Reign in the Champions League and a run of negative results saw him leave the club in January 2019, following a shock defeat to Portimonense.
Saudi Arabia, Russia and Egypt
The next chapters of his coaching career Rui Vitoria were written in Saudi Arabia. Shortly after his departure from Benficasigned a contract with Al Nasr, with whom he was crowned champion, while under the guidance of the Portuguese, the team reached the semi-finals of the Asian Champions League. He left in December 2020 “paying” for the poor harvest of points in the league.
From Saudi Arabia he moved to Russia for the Spartacus Moscow. A collaboration that started with… grumbling and ended almost six months later. The Portuguese joined hands in May 2021 with the Russian team, a development that led to the resignation of Zarema Salikova, a member of the Board of Directors and wife of Leonid Fedun, one of the owners of the club, as she strongly disagreed with the hiring of Vitoria!
Despite the… electrifying atmosphere, Vitoria managed to pick up points through Spartak Moscow’s European run, putting in excellent performances for his group Europa League against the then strong Napoli and Leicester. But in the Russian league, the capital team was in 9th place. The finale was written in December 2021, with Rui Vitoria paying for the heavy defeat by Zenit among others.
In July of 2022Rui Vitoria agreed to coach her national team Egypt. The contract was for four years, but the partnership was terminated last February as, under Vitoria’s guidance, Egypt failed to progress far enough to the 2023 Cup of Nations.
Cooperation with the Greeks
The new coach of Panathinaikos had worked with several Greek footballers while he was on the Benfica bench. The “Eagles” had – and still have – a special connection with Greek football, as several internationals have played there since the beginning of the 21st century.
Vitoria had a loving partnership with them Costa Mitroglouwho performed tremendously there, but also with Andrea Samari. He had also given a basic jersey to Odysseus Wall constructionwho was transferred in 2018 from Panathinaikos.
Except for the Greeks, under his guidance Rui Vitoria several footballers competing in Europe’s top leagues emerged, such as João Felix, Renato Sanchez and Reuben Zeus.
Rui Vitoria’s new assignment
In the summer, the “greens” gave the keys to the team to Diego Alonsobut the collaboration between them did not bear fruit. In a league where everyone “goes wrong” every weekend, Panathinaikos… managed to make the most mistakes. In Europethe appearance in Amsterdam against Ajax and the epic qualification against Lens, followed by the draw in Bathrooms Luca and the hands down defeat to Chelsea. In addition, despite the fact that significant investments were made in transfer levelunder Alonso o Panathinaikos unable to find rhythm, having very poor offensive production and correspondingly poor defensive behavior.
At the competitive level, Panathinaikos it seems that he is betting on his experience Rui Vitoria but also on a CV that boasts championship experience, title winning but also a downward trend in recent years, which the 54-year-old Portuguese wishes to reverse.
Of course, Panathinaikos wants the same as it is looking for stability and a new beginning aiming to win the championship after 14 years. Vitoria will be the third to sit on the bench of the Greek Cup winners after the surprise finale with Ivan Jovanovic at Christmas 2023, as the terms of Fatih Terim and Diego Alonso proved short.
This mission can only be described as easy beyond the immediate results deemed necessary in order for the trefoil to be firmly in the title game, Rui Vitoria is called upon to re-inspire and “warm up” the trefoil world. A relationship that was built with patience and difficulty in the Jovanovic era, but deteriorated very quickly in the months that followed. The 54-year-old coach will go straight into the “deep” middle of the season, with the first goal of getting results in Greece and Europe that will ensure him the necessary… calmness.
Briefly and in chronological order, Vitoria has conquer the third division championship with Fátima, (2008/09), the Portuguese Cup with Vitoria Guimaraes (2012/13), two Leagues, two Cups and a Super Cup with Benfica (2015/17), one Championship and one Saudi Cup with Al Nasr (2018/19).
On an individual level, the new coach of Panathinaikos has twice been named Coach of the Year in Portugal and three times Coach of the Month in Saudi Arabia…
