Rui Rio’s victory was confirmed to journalists even before the official results were released. The final result is expected to be 53% or 54% for the current party leader versus 47% for the former Social Democratic parliamentary leader.
Luís Montenegro has already acknowledged defeat and said that he has already called President Rui Rio to greet him for the victory, asking him to have “the ability to return unity to the party”.
“There is no mistake here and no doubt he is the winner of these elections, he is a creditor of our compliance,” said Luís Montenegro, who claimed to represent the votes of around 47% of PSD activists.
The candidate who did not pass the second round, Miguel Pinto Luz, congratulated Rio “for the victory and for having earned the militants’ trust”, on Facebook. “The PSD needs, after this period of internal dispute, to return to being a credible option and the real alternative to the current Government. The PSD will count on my loyal and interventionist activism, as I have always performed ”, he writes.
