Ruhrtalente Program in Essen-Stoppenberg: Scholarships, Support, and Career Choices

Essen-Stoppenberg It’s about choosing a career, but also about democracy and a quiet place to learn: This is how Aaron Sakru from Essen is now being accompanied.

Aaron Sakru, a student at the Episcopal Secondary School at Stoppenberg, is one of 200 young people who have been accepted into the “Ruhrtalente” program, in which – largely financed by the RAG Foundation – committed and performance-oriented students from the Ruhr area receive scholarships Scholarship holders are supported.

This means that Aaron is in good company at the Stoppenberg school center; there are currently ten “Ruhrtalents” there. Every year, the secondary school tries to motivate eighth and ninth graders to successfully apply and to support them in the selection process – and some “Ruhrtalents” then move to the neighboring high school in order to complete their Abitur after completing their secondary school leaving certificate.

Young people have permanent contacts at “Ruhrtalenten”.

Benedikt Bahrfeck, Aaron’s class teacher and deputy head of the secondary school, particularly emphasizes the individual and tailor-made support of the young people as a plus point of the program: “The Ruhrtalente have permanent contacts with their talent scouts who make individual arrangements, depending on the interests and support needs of the students Students.” For example, if there are difficulties in foreign language lessons, language trips or tutoring from native speakers are possible.

In other cases, it involves support in kind, such as a laptop with special software. “A student with five siblings has even been given office hours so that she can study in peace,” reports Bahrfeck, emphasizing the diverse possibilities that speak for the program from an educational perspective.

Career choice in focus for “Ruhrtalenten”.

In addition to individual support, the “Ruhrtalente” offers other offers for its scholarship holders such as academies, internships and workshops. In addition to further education and professional training, it is also about political participation, for example during visits to Berlin, explains Bahrfeck: “The program always has to do with choosing a career and planning for the future – but also wants to promote the idea of democracy.”

When he thinks of former “Ruhr talents”, Bahrfeck says: “They become more mature than others – and they get into areas, for example through internships, that others don’t get into.” In addition, the support not only covers the school years, but also supports the young people also during studies or training.

Aaron still has time until then. He is primarily interested in technology and may want to pursue an engineering career at some point. Until then, the school’s main focus is on the Abitur. Even before he was officially accepted into the “Ruhrtalenten”, he worked on 3D printers, computer animations, the design of cars and the topic of “autonomous driving”. Aaron will soon discuss the rest of the program with his talent scout.
