Spanish player Rudy Fernández left the match against Greece due to a concussion. The Real Madrid legend, who is playing his last professional matches and his sixth Olympic Games (a record in men’s basketball), was accidentally hit in the final quarter by his teammate Juancho Hernangómez, who hit the captain’s face with his shin while fighting for a ball.
Rudy went straight to the bench, where he was treated by doctor Carlos Salas. After sitting for a few minutes and seeing that the shock was not going away, he was accompanied by the doctor and the team’s physiotherapist to the locker room tunnel. Both of them, part of the team’s staff, helped the captain to walk, putting his arms around the necks of the two workers. Minutes after the end of the match, it was announced that Rudy would be available for Friday’s match.
Spain beat Giannis Antetokounmpo’s Greece (84-77) in a thrilling, hard-fought match and maintains its chances of making it to the quarter-finals while awaiting a game against Canada on the last day of the group stage. The victory gives Sergio Scariolo’s team some breathing room after losing the first game of the Games against Australia. Now, Spain depends on itself to qualify.
