Rudy Giuliani Files for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy After $146 Million Defamation Case

Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani filed for bankruptcy after a jury in Washington, D.C., ordered him to start to pay $146 million for defaming two former Georgia election workers, Ruby Freeman and Wandrea Moss.

Giuliani filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in Manhattan.

Donald Trump’s former lawyer also referred to debts of up to $500 million dollars and around $10 million dollars.

Giuliani spokesman Ted Goodman said in a statement that the bankruptcy filing “should not come as a surprise to anyone.”

No one could have reasonably believed that Mayor Rudy Giuliani would be able to pay such a high punitive amount.“Goodman stated, according to picked up NBC News.

The former New York mayor added: “Chapter 11 will provide Mayor Giuliani the opportunity and time to file an appeal, while also providing transparency to his finances under the supervision of the bankruptcy court, to ensure that all creditors receive equitable and fair treatment throughout the process.”

On the other hand, Giuliani’s presentation before the court also demonstrated that, in addition to the Freeman and Moss ruling, Giuliani owes nearly $1 million in taxes.

Despite this, The former mayor of New York will also have to pay the $146 million dollarssince the crime to which it is attributed, which is defamation of former Georgia election workers, is not covered by bankruptcy protection.

The judge’s arguments

In her ruling Wednesday, U.S. District Court Judge Beryl Howell justified her decision citing Giuliani’s history as an “uncooperative litigant”his mounting debts in other court cases, and concerns that he will “hide his assets” within the 30-day period.

“Giuliani’s failure to ‘satisfy the even more modest monetary awards previously awarded in this case’ provides good cause to believe that you will seek to dissipate or conceal your assets during the 30-day period“, the judge established in her order.

Howell wrote that he did not consider the amount to be paid excessive.

“The amount of damages for defamation awarded by the jury was almost $10,000,000 less than the amount requested by the plaintiffs for reputational damage,” he noted.
