Rudy Giuliani, former mayor of New York, declared personal bankruptcy before the American courts on Thursday, December 21. He was ordered, a week earlier, to pay $148 million to two Georgia election assessors, who were suing him for defamation after the 2020 presidential election. The judge ordered the payment “immediate” of the sum, to prevent the lawyer from gaining time by hiding his assets, according to local media.
Rudy Giuliani spearheaded Donald Trump’s legal offensive to contest the results of the 2020 presidential election, particularly in Georgia. The two complainants had been victims of a flood of threats and insults, particularly racist, after the lawyer had accused them of rigging the results of the election in this southern state. He relied on a video showing them exchanging an object during the counting of ballots. The lawyer claimed it was a USB stick, which actually turned out to be a mint.
Donald Trump’s ex-lawyer described the claimed amount of $148 million as“absurdity”. This declaration of bankruptcy “shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone”defended his advisor Ted Goodman in a press release. “No one could reasonably think that Mayor Rudy Giuliani would be able to pay such a punitive amount”he insisted.
