RTU student converts coffee grounds into new material

RTU pointed out that Latvians drink more and more coffee – last year about 5.6 million kilograms of coffee went on sale. Its thickness can be used for cosmetic purposes or to improve the soil, but much of it ends up in waste.

However, Haritonova, a master’s student at the Institute of Design Technologies of the Faculty of Materials Science and Applied Chemistry of RTU, offers to use coffee residues usefully, stressed RTU, explaining that she creates environmentally friendly and compostable material from coffee thicknesses and natural binders.

The RTU student has stated that so far she has made pitchers, as well as plans to make pots for growing plants. At the same time, the use could be much wider, for example, this material could be used to make reusable cups for taking coffee, various types of accessories, dishes, decorative items, even decorative wall panels, said Haritonova.

“In the future, I would like to work with a cafe to create its entire interior, using products made of coffee grounds,” she said.

According to the information provided by RTU, Haritonova continues researching the material, and in the autumn she will perform experiments in the laboratories of the Faculty of Materials Science and Applied Chemistry of RTU in search of the best binders and coatings.

RTU pointed out that previous tests have shown that the material is durable. For example, a two-centimeter-thick plate is almost impossible to break. The necessary shapes can be cut from the plate, holes can also be drilled in it, thus it can be used for the production of various products instead of wood.

However, further testing is required to make the material as resistant to moisture as possible, as well as its mechanical properties, tensile, bending and other properties.
