RSUI Doctor: Use Antibiotics Wisely

The doctor also explained why the antibiotic needs to be spent.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, DEPOK – Consultant doctor for tropical diseases and infections at the University of Indonesia Hospital (RSUI) dr. Adityo Susilo invites people to use usage antibiotics wisely. Because, the use of the wrong and not according to the indication can cause resistance.

“Antibiotics function to kill germs and work specifically and are not a cold medicine. If antibiotics are not used as indicated, they can cause germs that are resistant to antibiotics,” he said in the event. RSUI which held the 32nd public speaking seminar with the main theme “Let’s Use Antibiotics Wisely” in Depok, West Java, Wednesday (25/11).

According to him, the mechanism of action of antibiotics is to destroy cell walls. Therefore, antibiotics are intended to kill bacteria, not viruses.

“In a viral disease, logically there is no need for antibiotics,” he said.

It says some doctors use it antivirus in treating viral diseases. However, not all virus need an antivirus.

Because, some viruses are inherent self-limiting which means that the disease can heal itself without medication in the presence of a strong immune system.

There is a reason antibiotics need to be spent. This is because it takes a certain amount of time for the bacteria to really die.

Usually, the waiting time is around 5-7 days or you can follow the doctor’s instructions as some antibiotics can be different. “If it is not spent because you feel that your body is in good condition, you are worried that the bacteria has not really died and can cause re-infection,” he said.

Adityo Susilo conveyed that infection is a condition when microorganisms enter the body. Infection can cause fever, but fever is not always due to infection.

“When we have a fever, we generally experience discomfort because the body’s metabolism is running abnormally. Fever is a sign of inflammation or changes in thermoregulation regulation,” he said.

Clinical microbiology specialist, dr. Ardiana Kusumaningrum, Sp.MK said that antibiotics can only be prescribed if there is a suspicion of a bacterial infection that has been carried out by a previous physical examination, history taking, or laboratory examination (supporting examination). Some examples of the wrong use of antibiotics include saving antibiotics for future illnesses, stopping drugs when they feel better (not completing), sharing drugs or using other people’s drugs, incorrect type, dose, method of use and duration of therapy.

“Misuse of antibiotics can cause several problems, such as the ineffective use of antibiotics, can lead to bacterial resistance to antibiotics, and these bacteria can spread to other people and the environment,” he said.

There are several consequences of antibiotic resistance, namely more severe illness and longer duration, increased toxicity, increased mortality, and higher costs. “Some tips for preventing resistance are using antibiotics only in conditions of bacterial infection that have previously been consulted with a doctor, use them according to a prescription, do not force asking for antibiotics, and diligently wash hands,” said Ardiana Kusumaningrum, who is familiarly called dr. Arum.
