In the hall of Riga Stradins University (RSU) on October 12, the 3rd year students of the Faculty of Dentistry celebrated the White Coats Festival, which is a symbolic transition from working with mannequins in the pre-clinic to clinical work with patients. The White Coat Festival is an RSU tradition.
At the event, both local and foreign students gave a solemn promise of commitment to honestly perform the duties of the dentist and dental hygienist profession. Before that, they were addressed by the Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry, Assoc. prof. Andris Ābeltiņš and they were introduced to the work organization of each clinic and department. In addition, students were again reminded about infection control, ethical and behavioral norms in clinics.
RSU is one of the few universities in Europe that celebrates this important moment for dental students – meeting their first patients. In other parts of the world, especially in the USA, since the 80s of the last century, this holiday has become one of the most important and solemn traditions of medical universities.
For the first time such a holiday (White Coat Ceremony) organized in the USA in 1989 at the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine (Pritzker School of Medicine). Today, the tradition has been adopted by many medical and dental schools in the US and elsewhere. This holiday is celebrated in Canada, Israel, Great Britain, Poland and elsewhere. On the other hand, since 1995, this tradition has also been adopted by pharmacy, veterinary faculties, physical therapy and optometry schools in the USA.
RSU Faculty of Dentistry is one of the oldest and most traditional faculties of RSU, and the only one in Latvia where future dentists are educated. The dental study program is one of the most popular RSUs, as one of the biggest competitions for budget places is formed every year during admission. Students must study dentistry for five years, and already in the first years they have practical lessons in pre-clinical training rooms, where special mannequins in the form of a human head are used.
It should be reminded that the RSU Institute of Stomatology has specially and modernly equipped pre-clinical training rooms, thus allowing to prepare students in the best possible way for daily work in practice with patients.
