‘I promise you that I will live to be a hundred’, the book by Royce de Vries (35) about his father Peter R., has been awarded the NS Audience Award 2024. Royce himself ‘finding this decision difficult to follow, he said. says in a message on Instagram.

Royce says his publisher told him about this ‘some time ago’. “I would like to make it clear that I do not care about awards. The fact that the book is here now – my ‘third child’ – is the most important thing to me,” he writes. “The special messages I receive every day from people reading also gives me that confirmation.’ According to Royce, these readers are ‘moved’ by the book and receive ‘support and strength’ from it. Some even feel “inspired to be a better father or son.” ‘No price can match that.’
“Nevertheless,” Royce continues, “the decision affects me. The feelings I have about the book and the events surrounding it are my reason, but maybe a bigger place is that I can’t follow the decision.’ He points to that I promise I will live like a hundred one of the six best-selling Dutch books of the past year and is even the best-selling Dutch non-fiction book of the year. “The reader should have the last word.”
Royce emphasizes that more important things have happened in recent years. “But I still felt the need to express my feelings about this on this platform. Of course, my congratulations to the writers mentioned. On to the next book…’ You can vote for the NS Audience Award until 14 November. The winner will be announced on the same day.
Peter R. de Vries was shot in Amsterdam on July 6, 2021. He died on July 15.
Last June, an Amsterdam court imposed a prison sentence of up to 28 years in a criminal case for the murder of a crime reporter. Less than what the Public Prosecution Service wanted, which is life in prison. Royce explained why he ‘won’t lose sleep’ over this reduced penalty provision:
