King Constantine died on Tuesday after a long illness. He lived to be 82 years old. He was King of Greece from 6 March 1964 until the royal house in the country was abolished on 1 June 1973.
Royals from all over Europe are present during the funeral on Monday afternoon. The ecclesiastical part of the ceremony takes place in the Metropolitan Cathedral in Athens, while the funeral itself takes place at the castle of Tatoi outside Athens, where the king’s parents are also buried.

Konstantin was married to the Danish princess Anne Marie – the sister of the Danish queen Margrete. They have two daughters and four sons. The eldest son Paul, Duke of Sparta (born 1967), would have been heir to the throne.
Both the Danish Queen, the Crown Prince, Prince Joachim and Princess Benedikte are present during the funeral. King Carl Gustaf and Queen Silvia represent Sweden.

Both the Prince of Wales and the Princess of Wales are present at the funeral. So are English Princess Anne and the Spanish royal couple, King Felipe and Queen Letizia. As well as representatives from the Dutch and Belgian royal houses.
After democracy was restored in Greece – in 1974 – a referendum was held. There was a majority for the king to remain deposed.
After he was deposed as king, Constantine II lived in exile for nearly 40 years. The first time he returned to Greece was in connection with the funeral of his mother, Queen Fredrika in 1981.
