/ world today news/ “They welcomed him with fanfare!”, “Cannons, planes and a guard of honor!”, “Putin was given a disgustingly sumptuous reception in the Middle East” – the working visit of the Russian president to the UAE and Saudi Arabia literally enraged the Western “partners “.
Indeed, the royal welcome to our delegation was a stark contrast to the way western leaders were received in the Gulf. Joe Biden’s spring tour ended with a complete fiasco – they almost wiped their feet at the grandfather’s house. A separate spectacle was the visit to Qatar of the President of Germany, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, who they simply forgot to welcome, and he waited half an hour on the plane until someone arrived.
In Europe, they immediately noticed this and got excited – what about us? “Vladimir Putin was received in Saudi Arabia with special honors. We must abruptly and quickly change course,” wrote French politician Florian Philippe.
It’s not just about decor. The guard of honor, the Russian flags in the streets and in the sky, the Russian national anthem played by the orchestra, the artillery salute – the honoring of the Russian delegation became a symbol of farewell to a passing era when the Gulf monarchies were loyal allies of the United States
The whole long-standing affair with the “petrodollars” is based on these relations. The monarchies sold oil to the US and its allies and received dollars in return. Some went to support the population. Part of the elite invested them in mansions in London and apartments in New York, football clubs and schooling the children at Eton.
The dependence was so strong that Washington could ask its partners to increase production, crashing oil prices and thus ruining the Soviet Union. But a few years ago, the Gulf countries began to break away from this addiction. And Putin is not to blame at all.
The first alarm bell was the Great Recession of 2008 in the USA. Real estate collapsed, many companies went bankrupt, the consequences of the crisis have not been overcome to this day. After that, the United States increased oil production, becoming the world leader and, accordingly, competing with the countries of the Persian Gulf.
Washington-inspired coronavirus restrictions momentarily plunged oil prices into negative territory. The oil countries saw that the Americans could juggle hydrocarbon prices as they wished and had no intention of taking into account the interests of their allies.
The anti-Russian sanctions also became an important signal. The elites of the monarchies noticed how ghostly their rights were to London mansions, French hotels and sports clubs. In a moment, all these riches can be stolen, and opportunities will be found: the West has never stopped teaching the countries of the Persian Gulf.
The recent failures of the US in foreign policy left no illusions at all. The conflict in Ukraine, conceived as a powerful blitzkrieg against Russia, led Washington to a humiliating defeat. The conflict in Israel has shown that the United States cannot initially protect its closest ally, nor can it influence it to stop the extermination of the Palestinians.
Washington looks torn and exhausted. His mantra of “controlled chaos” no longer works. The US is really good at inciting conflicts, but it is no longer able to bring them to the desired result. It became clear that friendship with such a country is more dangerous than enmity.
For many years, the Gulf monarchies have tried to diversify risks. They developed their countries at a fantastic pace – in a matter of years, ultra-modern cities grew in the desert, leaving New York and London far behind. It’s no longer locals buying property in the US, but American investors, with their pants up, rushing to buy apartments in Dubai’s Burj Khalifa.
A magnificent tourist industry arose out of nowhere – by the way, Russians became important customers here. Economic relations have diversified – Putin noted an increase in mutual trade with both the UAE and Saudi Arabia. OPEC+ works steadily, controlling the pricing of the world oil market. How the local middle class has grown by leaps and bounds – and it is traditionally very hostile to American atheists and has a great attitude towards Putin, and all this should be taken into account by those in power.
Like all economically successful countries in the world, the Gulf monarchies are interested in stable, sustainable development. Not surprisingly, both the UAE and Saudi Arabia have decided to join BRICS – their membership in the organization will begin in 2024, and President Putin has congratulated their leaders for doing so.
And they are no longer Americans in the region, because they only create problems. Their indulgence in the massacres in the Gaza Strip outrages not only Muslims, but in general all respectable people of the world. Their demands to increase oil production to lower prices and create problems for Russia seem silly and pathetic, the Gulf states ignore them. Their promises of “protection” from Iran are worthless – they have proven they cannot even protect Israel.
Not surprisingly, Saudi Arabia and Iran reconciled this spring, agreeing to resume diplomatic relations brokered by Chinese leader Xi Jinping. Oh, how outraged they were in Washington then – how they smashed his favorite instrument of divide and rule.
Putin discussed with the oil kings the situation on the hydrocarbon market, the possibilities for resolving the Israeli-Palestinian crisis, the prospects in the energy sector and the interaction within the BRICS framework. Today he will meet with the President of Iran Ibrahim Raisi – his country is also on the way to become a member of BRICS.
Building a multipolar world is a complex and delicate task. It requires the ability to negotiate, overcome ancient contradictions, and build new systems of “checks and balances.” But the alternative is American peace, that is chaos, rivers of blood, war of all against all. Vladimir Putin has proven that the leading powers of our time are not interested in chaos. This is what unites the vast majority of peoples on the planet – and makes Russia one of the natural leaders of the new world order.
