Nov 14, 2023 at 8:38 p.m

The Royal Military Police arrested five men in Twente on Tuesday in an investigation into human trafficking. They are suspected of involvement in a Syrian human smuggling network that operated from the Netherlands.

It concerns five men – in their thirties and forties – from Hengelo and Enschede. The Royal Military Police also investigated the suspects’ homes and two business premises.

According to the military police, dozens of people have been smuggled from Syria to Europe via the network. According to the military police, this happened under inhumane circumstances.

The people smuggled to Europe paid amounts of up to 25,000 euros. They often did this via underground bankinga system in which large amounts of money are moved outside regular banks.

The military police discovered the network when “a stranger” was found a few months ago during an inspection by Mobile Security Supervision in the border region. This is a team from the military police that tries to combat illegal migration and human smuggling.

About a hundred military police were involved in Tuesday’s arrests. The police supported them. The military police do not rule out that more people will be arrested.
