The royal family will not go to Lech, Austria, during the spring holidays, the Government Information Service confirmed on Tuesday.
In doing so, they are following the advice of Prime Minister Mark Rutte not to plan any holidays abroad until the end of March. The Oranges would also not be welcome on the snowy slopes. As part of the corona measures, Austria has opened the ski areas only to its own residents.
Last year the royal family was still in Lech, where the family has been a guest every year for decades. The corona virus was already emerging at that time, especially in the ski areas.
This led to Willem-Alexander, Máxima and the three princesses having to avoid physical social contact some time later because five infections had been detected in Lech, the source of which was not clear. The RIVM then advised to avoid new contacts for two weeks and to limit existing contacts.
Family has been visiting Lech since the 1960s
According to a calculation by the king, the House of Orange would have settled in Lech for the 61st time this year if the corona virus did not make that impossible.
“I can say exactly how many years we have been here, because in 1985 we celebrated our 25th anniversary here”, Willem-Alexander said in an interview a few years ago. “Officially my family has been coming here since 1960, but before that time the family had already come over from St. Anton a few times.”
Since 2005 there have been officially announced photo sessions with Willem-Alexander’s family. Only in 2010 and 2012 were those meetings with the press not there; in 2010 because the family was in Vancouver for the Winter Olympics and in 2012 because of Prince Friso’s skiing accident.
