Royal Families’ Christmas Traditions: From Church Visits to Wardrobe Choices

According to tradition, several royal families in Christian countries have taken the opportunity to visit churches this Christmas. On Christmas Day, among others, King Harald (86) and Queen Sonja (86) visited the service in the Holmenkollen chapel, while their British relatives went to the church in Sandringham.

Moved to tears

Here it was King Charles (75) and Queen Camilla (76) who attended the annual service. Prince William (41), Duchess Kate (41) and their three children, Princess Charlotte (8), Prince George (10) and Prince Louis (5) also made the trip to the well-known church.

PLACE OF HONOR: On Sunday evening, Queen Margrethe of Denmark (83) invited royals from home and abroad to a grand gala dinner at Christiansborg Castle in connection with her grandson Prince Christian’s (18) coming of age. Here it was also the latter who stole the attention when he appeared in a rather unusual item of clothing during the Christmas service.

Here, several people noticed that the young heir was wearing long trousers.

The service thus marked the five-year-old’s first time wearing long trousers at an official appearance with the royal family.

Despite the fact that we are in the winter season, it is tradition for young boys in the royal family to wear shorts.

– The court has refused

– Trousers are for older boys and men, while shorts for little boys is one of the implicit class markers we have in England, etiquette expert William Hanson told the magazine Harper’s Bazaar in June.

So far, Louis has worn shorts for every occasion – and in all kinds of weather. Just like his brother George before him.

– Although times change, trousers on younger boys are considered something from the middle class. “No self-respecting royal wants to be thought of as someone from the middle class,” he further told the magazine.

Prince William and King Charles were also often seen wearing shorts when they were young.
