Roy Keane told ITV Sport on Wednesday night that he would ‘go crazy’ at Tottenham striker Harry Kane for falling too deep during England’s 1-0 win against Austria.

In preparation for Euro 2020, the Three Lions hosted Austria in an international friendly at the Riverside Stadium, with Tottenham’s main man leading the line for his country.

But just as he’s been doing with Tottenham this season, Kane was constantly falling deep and out of the box when players like Trent Alexander-Arnold were in a prime position to shoot the ball into the box.

Kane’s constant desire to fall deep didn’t sit well with Keane, who thought the Englishman’s teammates should have tried him.

“There is nothing wrong with Kane connecting because he feels that joy with Tottenham,” Keane said. “But I think when it comes to the wide areas. We saw Trent return once or twice because he was looking ahead (and there was no one in the box).

“If you’re Trent, just put it in the box when you’re in a good wide position and then it’s Kane’s turn. You argue later. The ball man is dictating it, so Kane binding is fine.

“But when it goes wide, and you have brilliant defenders and open players who are going to put it in the area, and you are the main scorer, then you get into the area.

“I hope that players from all over the world will try Kane. Do not panic. I’ll put it on and say ‘next time I put that ball in its place, you better get in that box.’ You are the main threat. You’re going to go crazy with him.

By Kane’s standards, it was a poor performance by the Premier League’s top scorer and assistant in the just-concluded campaign.

Since it was a friendly, he was replaced in the second half by Gareth Southgate, with Everton’s leap forward Dominic Calvert-Lewin taking his place.

Another friendly awaits England this Sunday against Romania, before their first Euro 2020 group stage match against Croatia begins next week.
