LONDON (AP) — With another win, Roy Hodgson has likely completed his short-term mission of ensuring Crystal Palace stays in the Premier League for another season.
Palace beat West Ham 4-3 at Selhurst Park on Saturday to reach 40 points, the number that has long been associated with staying in the top flight.
This should be enough to guarantee the survival of Palace, since the team is 11 points above the relegation zone.
Since Hodgson, 75, took over as caretaker manager until the end of the season, Palace have won four of six league games and lost just once. Prior to his arrival for his second spell with the club, Palace had gone 13 games without a win in all competitions.
Palace came from behind with Tomas Soucek’s nine-minute strike scoring three goals in a 15-minute period with Jordan Ayew, Wilfried Zaha and Jeffrey Schlupp.
Michail Antonio narrowed the gap to 35 minutes before Eberechi Eze’s penalty after being brought down by Nayef Aguerd and regaining his two-goal lead after 66 minutes.
Aguerd made up for it with West Ham’s third goal – all from corners – in the 72nd minute, but Palace held on to win.
West Ham remains five points above the relegation zone with five games to go.
