What’s going on in the UK? It seemed that the worst was over, that the Covid were just a distant memory. Instead the bulletins force London to take a dangerous step back, at least from the point of view of numbers. In the last 24 hours, almost 45,000 new cases and 145 deaths have been reported, while the previous day more than 43,000 infections and 148 victims. The British media also point out another aspect. Confirmed infections in the last week are 12.8% higher than those of the week relating to 3-9 October, and deaths by 5.4%
New alarm?
In addition to mere statistical data, it is important to monitor the health situation. As reported by Republictraffic jams have formed outside UK hospitals ambulances due to the recent surge in cases. Not only that: doctors and paramedics explain that the emergency departments would be “on the edge of the abyss“This formula refers to the darkest days of the first two pandemic waves, which occurred in 2020 and 2021.
The UK has to deal with a trend which, if maintained, could prove to be extremely dangerous, assuming and not conceding that the scenario already reaches the critical threshold. It is in fact the fourth consecutive day that the positive tests have broken through the ceiling of 40,000 infections. Hospitals seemed able to cope with the inevitable increase in autumn infections, an increase due to the greater contagiousness of the new variants and the stop to any restrictions. But the recent chronicles tell something else.
Between anxiety and worry
At the moment, however, apprehension is growing in view of the imminent future. The sanitary system will it be able to contain the surge in infections? The Guardian wrote that many patients are forced to wait for their hospitalization aboard ambulances, sometimes up to 11 hours. The reason: shortage of space and little personal emergency room.
But be careful, because – and this is the difference from the past – the patients “parked” in the ambulances are not all infected with Covid. These are people who need hospitalization for various causes and diseases. The fact is that the backfire of the Sars-CoV-2 pandemic has put pressure on hospitals and emergency treatment. The question that many are asking is obvious: what will happen if Covid were to awaken? If for now the coronavirus turns out to be the indirect cause of the overcrowding of hospitals, it cannot be excluded that it could turn into a direct cause. Just like in the recent past.
Let us remember that, at least for the moment, in London and its surroundings there are no longer any obligations whatsoever, and yet social distancing has evaporated like snow in the sun. The United Kingdom was in fact the first European country to return to normal. In any case, Boris Johnson he does not seem to be willing – even according to what has been declared in the previous months – to take steps backwards. Health emergency permitting.
