Rowing. Caen cadets take gold at French championships

It is a superb surprise that the rowers of the Société Nautique de Caen and Calvados achieved by becoming champions of France in the men’s eight at Libourne.

They were hoping for a final, they got the title. Augustin Philippe, Grégoire Gasser-Pérais, Grégoire Buot, Awen Thomas, Thomas Laroche, Nathan Bayle de Jesse, Julien Wahl, Tristan Lechevallier as well as the coxswain Louis Tesson won the French eight-oar rowing championship with Caen. We realized during the competition that there was something to do and that this boat could claim a medal. But nobody would have bet on a title before the start of the competition!

By winning their series in front of Bayonne, Friday July 5, the Caennais sent a strong first message. They did it again the next day in the semi-final against the same Basque eight. This time, doubt was no longer allowed: Caen could win. This is what happened on Sunday July 7, 2019, the SNCC dominating rowing competition led by Bayonne.

They managed to take shelter after 500 meters. They placed a second attack and it was known that the Bayonne boat was not going to return.

Caen thus offers a prestigious victory, historic in this category for the club. “The atmosphere made the difference,” appreciates the co-coach. All rowers appreciate each other. “The Caen formation starts from the front. The Caen boat offered an international qualification for the France – Great Britain match on Thursday 11 July in Nottingham.
