Actor Rowan Atkinson’s views are detrimental to the British government’s plans to phase out petrol and diesel cars, representatives of the Green Alliance think tank in the English House of Lords said. About it reports 7 February Sky News.
Let’s remember that Rowan Atkinson is known for his role as Mr. Bean in the TV series and film of the same name. But the Greens’ complaints stemmed from Atkinson’s July 2023 article for The Guardian, in which he was pessimistic about the prospects for electric vehicles.
“I increasingly feel like our honeymoon with electric vehicles is coming to an end, and that’s okay,” Atkinson wrote.
The actor considers electric cars “a little soulless,” and he was also critical of their use of lithium-ion batteries, which are harmful to the environment. Atkinson also mentioned that he came to his conclusions with a degree in electrical and electronics engineering. He actually graduated in this specialty from Newcastle University in 1975.
Drivers using the same car for longer periods of time and increased use of synthetic fuels will “eliminate the need for electric vehicles,” Atkinson said.
Representatives of the Green Alliance accused The Guardian of unprofessionalism in fact-checking and publishing Atkinson’s “initially false statements”.
Let us remind you that on February 2, the largest manufacturer of electric vehicles, Tesla, announced a recall of up to 2.2 million electric vehicles, including Cybertruck pickups released this year. Complaints arose regarding the font size of warning messages on the dashboard. The letters are too small, which can make it difficult to read critical information and thereby increase the likelihood of an accident, experts say.
And in December 2023, Tesla announced a recall of 2.031 million electric vehicles in the United States due to problems with the software responsible for autopiloting. Models produced between 2012 and 2023 are subject to recall and reprogramming: Model S, Model X, Model 3 and Model Y.
In October 2023, Fontanka showed how a Tesla car flew onto the sidewalk in the Vasileostrovsky district of St. Petersburg. The victims of the accident were a fence and a scooter.
