Rover Urges Action on Reduced Train Service in Flevoland to Avoid Traveler Disruptions and Traffic Jams

Travelers’ association Rover warns the province and municipal councils in a letter about the reduction in the number of trains in Flevoland. Rover believes that the province should do everything possible to persuade the NS to review the plans for the new timetable in Flevoland next year.

Next year, NS wants to run a sprinter between Amsterdam Central and Almere Oostvaarders only twice an hour during off-peak hours, weekends and on Fridays. The sprinter will also run only once per hour between Lelystad and Zwolle in the evenings and mornings at the weekend. According to Rover, the accessibility of the Dronten and Kampen Zuid stations is deteriorating sharply as a result.

But the deterioration is greatest for travelers to and from Almere Buiten, says Rover. This station still has two trains per hour in both directions during rush hour, while there are now six per hour. This is because previously canceled intercity trains will not return. According to Rover, the traveler in Flevoland had to give up quite a few travel options this year. For example, due to the corona aftermath and a lack of staff, fewer intercity trains ran between Lelystad and Schiphol during off-peak hours, and the sprinter between Almere Centrum and Oostvaarders was canceled at the weekend. That now threatens to become a long-term situation, says Rover.

In other places in the Netherlands, more trains will run. Rover-Flevoland is therefore asking the Provincial Council and municipalities to take action towards the NS. “If the situation with a limited train schedule in Flevoland lasts even longer, travelers risk dropping out,” Rover writes to the province and municipalities. In addition, the travelers association believes that a good train connection is also important for preventing traffic jams on the A6 and A1. “Only with an attractive train product can motorists be tempted to opt for the train.”
