Round of 16 of the DFB Cup: BVB, RB Leipzig and FC Bayern in the lucky draw

The hottest contenders for victory in the DFB Cup should have looked with joy at the draw for the round of 16 matches. Both Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig face a second division team in home games. The same applies to FC Bayern, should the upcoming second-round duel against Holstein Kiel be won.

The winner of the game between Bayern and Holstein Kiel will face SV Darmstadt 98 on February 2nd. BVB will receive SC Paderborn, the Leipzig team will face VfL Bochum.

FC Schalke 04, still without a win in the Bundesliga, must survive away from VfL Wolfsburg. Borussia Mönchengladbach travels to VfB Stuttgart. Rot-Weiss Essen, the only remaining fourth division team in the round of 16, will face the winner of the second round game between Bayer Leverkusen and Eintracht Frankfurt (January 12).

The games between Jahn Regensburg and 1. FC Köln and between Werder Bremen and SpVgg Greuther Fürth complete the round of 16. The quarter-finals will take place on March 2nd and 3rd. The cup winner will be determined at the final in Berlin’s Olympic Stadium on May 13th.

The second round games between Bayer Leverkusen and Eintracht Frankfurt (January 12th, 8:45 pm) and between FC Bayern and Holstein Kiel (January 13th, 8:45 pm) have yet to be played. The remaining 14 participants in the round of 16 for this trophy edition have, however, been determined.

With 1899 Hoffenheim (6: 7 i. E. against Greuther Fürth), Union Berlin (2: 3 against SC Paderborn) and Mainz 05 (0: 3 i. E. against VfL Bochum) had to say goodbye to three first division clubs.

RB Leipzig (3-0 against Augsburg), Borussia Mönchengladbach (5-0 at SV 07 Elversberg), VfL Wolfsburg (4-0 against SV Sandhausen) and Werder Bremen (3-0 at Hannover 96) qualified without any problems. BVB struggled for a long time, but ultimately won against Eintracht Braunschweig (2-0).

Bayer Leverkusen and Eintracht Frankfurt also don’t yet know whether they will be in the round of 16. The two Bundesliga clubs will not meet until January 12th (8:45 p.m.).
