The president of theRouen University, Joël Alexandre, decided tocancel an interdisciplinary study day devoted toLubrizol fire, causing theincomprehension and theindignation of part of the university community. This event, scheduled for Monday, September 27, 2021, aimed to present the first results obtained by researchers on the causes and consequences of the industrial accident, as well as their methodological questions.
An important moment for the academic world, but also for citizens still in search of an answer two years later. “For reasons beyond our control, and following a decision of the president of the university rendered on September 24, 2021, the study day is canceled”, simply indicated the organizing committee. For its part, the union section of the Snesup-FSU of the University of Rouen indicated “very much regret this decision” and “asking a few questions” in a press release widely distributed over the weekend.

“Was he pressured? ”
The union denounces a limitation of “academic freedoms” and wonders about possible “pressures” exerted on the presidency to arrive at such a decision. According to a trade unionist, crossed during the Lubrizolées Meetings Sunday, September 26, the will of the presidency to want to compartmentalize this day to the academic world only could have weighed in the balance. “The list of external guests did not, however, suggest a disturbance to public order,” he emphasizes.
“We ask the President of the university to publicly explain his decision and the reasons for this cancellation,” insisted in a press release dated September 27, 2021 the local Europe-Ecology group Les Verts Rouen, asking the question: “A- was he under pressure? ”
Postponed to a later date
According to the Presidency of the University of Rouen, this day “was to be open to the general public and involved feedback from researchers participating in the COP-HERL project. However, this one is subjected to a calendar of restitution of the whole of the results to the general public, defined in agreement with the various partners, we learned Monday, September 27 by way of press release.
The University therefore took the decision “to cancel and postpone this study day to a later date, in order to respect this schedule”.
