The city of Rotterdam wants to waive the thousands of fines imposed on people in the Tarwewijk last year. That traffic camera is now turned off.
The speed camera on Pleinweg was installed last December and aimed to improve the area’s air quality. During rush hour, no one was allowed to cross the road through the parallel lane. This was indicated on signs, but many motorists and residents continued to use the ‘shortcut’.
Some residents said that there was no shortcut at all; they say they use the road to get out of their area.
1.8 million euros
In nine months, 15,000 fines were issued, amounting to 1.8 million euros, writes a regional broadcaster Rijnmond. Some residents received dozens. They said that they did not receive correct information about the step during rush hour.
A resident previously told the broadcaster that he received a dozen traffic fines of 119 euros, a total of 1,428 euros. “I didn’t get the first fine until I had already committed many violations.” According to him, the traffic sign was not clearly visible.
Guidance questions
Local SP group asked questions about the speed camera before. According to the opposition party, the many fines hit the residents of the area hard financially. After an investigation, Alderman Lansink of Enforcement, Outreach and Traffic admits that the provision of information was inadequate. For example, the locals had not received a letter about the speed camera.
The consultant is in talks with the Public Prosecution Service and the Central Judicial Processing Agency (CJIB) to “eliminate every second and additional fine”. This is associated with a total of 750,000 euros in fines. The first fine will remain for everyone who has been lit.
Although the speed camera is now switched off, the exit ban at rush hour is still in place.
