Lee Towers will sing You’ll Never Walk Alone for the very last time during the upcoming marathon. The 78-year-old Rotterdam resident thinks it’s a good thing after 30 years. But who should sing the iconic song at the start of the marathon? We took to the streets and asked the people of Rotterdam.
Various names come up as possible successors, including Davina Michelle, Richard Visser and even Guus Meeuwis. But the people of Rotterdam also believe that Lee Towers cannot actually be replaced. “I just think Lee Towers. Finished. It just comes,” says a passerby, laughing. “That’s almost impossible, because it’s Lee Towers.”
Successor still unclear
We also asked the question to the people of Rotterdam on Facebook. They also mentioned different names, including De Wannebiezz and Robby Greekpoor. “The Wannebiezz who do that so beautifully, sang this together with Lee Towers in Ahoy,” someone responds.
The organization of the marathon itself has not yet thought about a successor. “We don’t yet know how we will approach it in the coming editions,” explains Amber Middelhoek of the NN Marathon. “But it has been played at the start of the marathon for 30 years and has really become part of the tradition.”
