– The volunteers of the Roth Technical Relief Agency worked 13,500 hours in 2023. A proud record.
The pumping of the Main-Danube Canal near Meckenlohe, heavy rain in Georgensgmünd and night-time truck accidents: the Roth Technical Relief Organization was also reliably there in 2023. At the camaraderie evening, those who helped were honored – and a wish was expressed.
This year, Roth local representative Manfred Loy consulted the artificial intelligence “ChatGPT” for his welcoming speech. Their findings hit the nail on the head: “Whether in natural disasters, accidents or other challenging situations, the Roth Technical Relief Organization is available as a reliable partner to provide help and support,” is one of the sentences quoted by Loy.

In 2023, around 50 THW activists would continue to work for the well-being of the community. 1,700 of the 13,500 hours worked were spent on operations. In Meckenlohe, the helpers pumped the canal in the area of the trough bridge empty on behalf of the waterways and shipping administration in order to enable the upcoming inspection of the bridge. During another operation on the canal, a damaged sports boat was recovered using a crane. A heavy rain event in Georgensgmünd in August and several truck accidents on the highways kept people busy at night.
Always up to date
Loy particularly emphasized the active participants’ willingness to undertake time-consuming training and further education. Four new helpers completed basic training in 2023, and the youth took part in weekly training courses. In order to be familiar with new equipment and prepared for all challenges, the managers organized ten training weekends, including at Deutsche Bahn or on the topics of dike defense and blackouts.
A highlight of the year was the THW family’s big celebration on the occasion of the local association’s 70th anniversary. The support association supported the general overhaul of the loading crane in 2023. The fleet has also been modernized in recent years through temporary economic stimulus packages and Corona aid.
Loy appealed to politicians to ensure adequate basic funding for the THW in the long term “so that we can face the challenges of civil protection with motivated emergency services in modern properties.” The local association is currently still hoping for new accommodation, which it was promised in the summer as one of four local associations in Bavaria from the THW construction program.
The volunteers’ efforts were also recognized by the guests of honor: “Especially in the snow chaos of the last few days, it has become clear again how indispensable the work of the THW is,” said Bundestag member Kristine Lütke from the FDP. When it comes to future financial resources, she advised balancing what is desirable with what is possible. The second mayor of Roth, Claudia Lux, paid tribute to those present for their time-consuming commitment: “You deserve recognition for your reliability and professionalism.”
One of the most active local associations
Max Krikler from the THW regional office in Ingolstadt praised THW Roth in his welcoming speech as one of the most active local associations in the region. He also regretted that the tight budget situation will make procurement of materials and vehicles much more difficult in the future. District fire officer Christian Mederer emphasized the long-standing, good cooperation between the emergency services organizations.
An example of this is the great commitment of some THW members in the local operations management support group, a group that comes together in the event of major disasters in the district. Oliver Trebing from the Roth police station thanked the THW for the quick and professional help, including on weekends and public holidays.
The highlight of the evening was the annual awards and honors: Martin Schwendner and Matthias Heyder received an award for 25 years of service in the local association. Stephan Maurer and Peter Wunschel were honored for 30 years of loyalty to THW. Finally, in recognition of their extraordinary commitment, Manfred Loy presented the volunteers Kathrin Schmidt, Timo Berg, Daniel Mitin and Michael Oberfichtner with the gold helper badge and Fabian Habel with the gold helper badge with a wreath.
ChatGPT once again aptly expressed what sets all these active people apart: “The volunteer members of this team show day after day that volunteer commitment can be a driving force for positive change. Their willingness to be there immediately in times of need is admirable and inspiring. “
